What is an O-ring and what is it for?
An O-ring is a ring-shaped sealing element with a circular cross section (the letter “O”). It sits in a groove between two surfaces and, when compressed, seals the joint against leakage of liquid, gas, or pressure. It is the most widespread and cheapest static and dynamic seal in engineering.
How do I choose the right O-ring?
You need three things: the size (inner diameter × cross section in mm), the material based on the medium and temperature, and the hardness (Shore A). The fastest route is our configurator — you enter the dimensions or the application and it offers compatible parts. For non-standard requests, our technician advises free of charge.
Which material suits which medium?
NBR is the all-rounder for mineral oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids. FKM (Viton®) handles aggressive chemicals and high temperatures. EPDM is ideal for water, steam, and brake fluids, but NOT for mineral oils. Silicone (VMQ) suits food applications and a wide temperature range. How do I find out which O-ring size I need?
Size is given as inner diameter (ID) × cross section (CS) in millimetres, for example 20 × 3 mm. Do not confuse inner diameter with outer diameter. If you only have the old part, measure it with a caliper — or send us the standard and we will find the equivalent.
What do standards like AS568, ISO 3601, and JIS mean?
They are systems of standardized O-ring sizes. AS568 is the American standard (inch sizes, widespread in automotive), ISO 3601 is the international metric standard, and JIS B2401 is the Japanese standard. If you know the standard code, use our size converter to find the matching metric size — for each one you can see straight away whether it is in stock.
