    PU O-ring 18 × 2 mm (inner diameter 18 mm, cross-section 2 mm). Outer diameter 22 mm. Hardness 90 Sh A. Temperature range -40 °C to 80 °C. Standard ISO3601-18x2.

For a static seal of this size (outer diameter 22 mm), the ISO 3601-2 / Parker O-Ring Handbook ORD 5700 design guidance recommends a groove depth of about 1.56 mm and a groove width of about 2.6 mm for the 2 mm cross-section — roughly 22 % squeeze.

    Material properties

Polyurethane (PU) is a thermoplastic elastomer with the highest abrasion resistance of all elastomers. It combines high tensile strength (typically 35 MPa), good resistance to mineral oils, cold water and lubricants. Operating temperature range is limited: -40 °C to +80 °C (short-term +100 °C). The main limitation is hydrolysis on contact with hot water or steam — PU must not be used there. Typical hardness 85-95 Shore A for dynamic sealing applications with high pressure loads.

    Suitable for various industries

PU O-rings are used in hydraulic presses, construction and mining equipment, pneumatic cylinders with high cycle loads, and in abrasive environments (slurry, sand). Typical areas: rod seals, wipers, slide bands, shaft covers in high-pressure environments.

    Application notes

Ideal for hydraulic rod seals and high-cycle applications with mineral oil. Do not use above +80 °C or with hot water / steam — material hydrolysis.

    Advantages

    • Highest abrasion resistance of any elastomer
    • High tensile strength (≈35 MPa)
    • Resistant to mineral oils and HLP hydraulic fluids
    • Suitable for high pressures (up to 40 MPa static)
    • First choice for rod and piston seals

Frequently asked questions about this O-ring

What is the temperature range of a PU O-ring?
This PU O-ring is rated for continuous service of roughly -40 to 80 °C. The material tolerates brief temperature peaks higher, but near the limits service life drops significantly. If you operate at the edge of the range, ask our technician about a more suitable compound.
What media is PU resistant to?
PU belongs to the nitrile/polyurethane family — it resists mineral oils, fuels, and hydraulic fluids, which is why it is the standard in engineering and hydraulics. It is not suited to ozone, strong acids, or polar solvents. For a specific medium, check compatibility in our chemical-resistance chart.
What do the dimensions of this O-ring mean?
The size 18 × 2 mm gives the inner diameter × cross section. The inner diameter must fit the groove or rod; the cross section sets the seal thickness. When replacing, do not confuse inner diameter with outer diameter. If you search by standard (AS568, ISO 3601, JIS), use our cross-reference finder.
What does 90 Shore A hardness mean?
A hardness of 90 Shore A expresses the stiffness of the rubber: a lower number (50–60) is softer and seals an uneven surface better, a higher one (80–90) better resists pressure and extrusion from the groove. For most common applications the optimum is around 70 Shore A. Under high pressure, choose a harder material and possibly a back-up ring.
