O-rings for water must resist hot water, steam, and disinfectants (chlorine, ozone). EPDM is the standard for water, steam, and chlorinated media; NBR is unsuitable for long-term hot-water contact (it swells). For potable-water contact, look for a material with a hygienic certification (e.g. WRAS, KTW, NSF/ANSI 61) — always verify it for the specific medium.

Which O-ring material for potable water?
For both cold and hot potable water, the most common choice is EPDM with a hygienic certification — it resists water, chlorine, and hot water and steam. At higher temperatures or with ozone disinfection, FFKM is also an option. Always request a material with declared potable-water conformity (e.g. WRAS, KTW, NSF/ANSI 61) and verify it for the application.
Why EPDM and not NBR for water?
EPDM has excellent resistance to water, hot water, steam, chlorine, and ozone, so it keeps its sealing capability long-term. NBR swells and hardens on prolonged hot-water contact and cracks under ozone. Keep NBR for oils and fuels; for water, steam, and chlorinated media choose EPDM.
Pool with chlorine or ozone — which material lasts?
Both chlorinated and ozonated water are aggressive to rubber. EPDM handles ordinary chlorinated pool water well. At high disinfectant concentrations or with ozonation, FFKM has the highest resistance. NBR is unsuitable for pool equipment because of its poor ozone resistance.
Will an O-ring withstand hot process water and sterilisation steam?
Yes — peroxide-cured EPDM handles hot water and steam at typical cleaning temperatures. Above roughly 150 °C continuous, or with aggressive disinfection cycles, FFKM is more suitable. Service life depends on temperature and cycle frequency; replace the rings preventively per the maintenance plan.
