    Material properties

Fluorocarbon rubber (FKM), known by the trade name Viton, is a premium elastomer for high-temperature and chemically demanding applications. It offers very good resistance to mineral oils, aromatic hydrocarbons, fuels including biodiesel, mineral acids, hot oils, ozone and oxygen. Operating temperature range is -20 °C to +200 °C, short-term up to +230 °C. It is an OEM standard for automotive engine seals. Not suitable for amines, ketones, esters, glycol-based brake fluids, hot water and steam.

    Suitable for various industries

FKM O-rings are used in engine systems, turbochargers, fuel injectors, chemical industry, oil & gas industry and aerospace. Typical applications include biodiesel fuel distribution seals, EGR systems, high-temperature hydraulic press cylinder seals, and chemical pumps.

    Application notes

Premium choice for engine systems, biodiesel fuel distribution and chemical industry. Avoid glycol-based brake fluid and ketones. In dynamic applications monitor compression set at temperatures above +150 °C.

    Advantages

    • High thermal resistance up to +200 °C (short-term +230 °C)
    • Resistant to fuels, mineral oils and aromatic hydrocarbons
    • Resistant to ozone, oxygen and UV radiation
    • Low compression set at elevated temperatures
    • OEM standard for automotive engine seals

Frequently asked questions about this O-ring

What is the temperature range of a FKM O-ring?
This FKM O-ring is rated for continuous service of roughly -20 to 200 °C. The material tolerates brief temperature peaks higher, but near the limits service life drops significantly. If you operate at the edge of the range, ask our technician about a more suitable compound.
What media is FKM resistant to?
FKM (Viton®/FFKM type) resists aggressive chemicals, fuels, oils, and high temperatures — the choice for the chemical industry and hot environments. Watch out for hot steam and glycol-based brake fluids, where EPDM is more suitable. For a specific medium, check compatibility in our chemical-resistance chart.
What do the dimensions of this O-ring mean?
The size 420 × 5 mm gives the inner diameter × cross section. The inner diameter must fit the groove or rod; the cross section sets the seal thickness. When replacing, do not confuse inner diameter with outer diameter. If you search by standard (AS568, ISO 3601, JIS), use our cross-reference finder.
What does 80 Shore A hardness mean?
A hardness of 80 Shore A expresses the stiffness of the rubber: a lower number (50–60) is softer and seals an uneven surface better, a higher one (80–90) better resists pressure and extrusion from the groove. For most common applications the optimum is around 70 Shore A. Under high pressure, choose a harder material and possibly a back-up ring.
