EPDM is an ethylene propylene diene rubber with excellent resistance to water, steam, polar solvents, glycol-based brake fluids, ester oils, ozone, UV radiation and weathering. Operating temperature range is -40 °C to +130 °C (sulfur-cured), peroxide-cured grade up to +150 °C and for steam. It is not resistant to mineral oils, fuels and most hydrocarbon oils. Available grades meet WRAS, KTW, DVGW, NSF 61 potable water approvals and EPDM-FDA for food contact.

Application notes

The only choice for potable water and glycol-based brake fluids (DOT). Not suitable for mineral oils or fuels — substituting NBR causes immediate failure. For steam use peroxide-cured grade.

What is the temperature range of a EPDM O-ring?

This EPDM O-ring is rated for continuous service of roughly -40 to 130 °C. The material tolerates brief temperature peaks higher, but near the limits service life drops significantly. If you operate at the edge of the range, ask our technician about a more suitable compound.

What media is EPDM resistant to?

EPDM resists water, steam, brake fluids, and water-based chemicals, and has excellent resistance to ozone and weathering. It is, however, NOT compatible with mineral oils and fuels — for those, use NBR or FKM. For a specific medium, check compatibility in our chemical-resistance chart.

What do the dimensions of this O-ring mean?

The size 142.47 × 3.53 mm gives the inner diameter × cross section. The inner diameter must fit the groove or rod; the cross section sets the seal thickness. A hardness of 80 Shore A expresses the stiffness of the rubber: a lower number (50–60) is softer and seals an uneven surface better, a higher one (80–90) better resists pressure and extrusion from the groove. For most common applications the optimum is around 70 Shore A. Under high pressure, choose a harder material and possibly a back-up ring.
